Individual Immigration Services 2026: New Fees, Work Permit Rules and Deadlines You Can’t Miss
Individual immigration services 2026 cover cases where one person is applying for a status, benefit or document: green cards, work permits, naturalization, visitor visas and related filings. This October brought three changes that affect almost every individual filer: new USCIS fees effective October 16, the end of automatic extensions for many work permit renewals, and a new rule on how filing deadlines are counted starting October 23. Here is what changed and how to protect your case with help from TPL Global.
What Individual Immigration Services Include
- Green card applications for individuals, whether through adjustment of status or consular processing. See our Green Card 101 guide.
- Work permit (EAD) initial applications and renewals.
- Naturalization (Form N-400) preparation and review. Read our top 7 citizenship application mistakes.
- Visitor visa preparation. See our B1/B2 visitor visa guide.
- Responding to Requests for Evidence and other USCIS notices.
Individual Immigration Services: 3 Rule Changes to Know Right Now
1. New USCIS Fees Took Effect October 16, 2026
USCIS announced inflation-based increases for certain fees. Requests postmarked on or after October 16, 2026 must include the new fee for the benefit requested, or USCIS will reject them.
| Fee | Previous | New (from Oct 16, 2026) |
| Annual Asylum Application Fee | $102 | $105 |
| Form I-131, Immigration Parole Fee | $1,020 | $1,050 |
| Form I-765, initial work permit for asylum applicants, parole or TPS | $560 | $570 |
| Form I-821, Temporary Protected Status | $510 | $520 |
These increases touch humanitarian-related categories most directly. Fees for other forms can differ, so always confirm the current amount on the USCIS filing fees page before you send a package. A wrong fee means a rejected filing and lost time.
2. Automatic Work Permit Extensions Are Ending
DHS finalized a rule, published October 14, that ends automatic extensions for many work permit renewals. It applies to renewals filed on or after October 30, 2025. Adjustment of status applicants, certain asylum applicants and H-4 spouses are among the groups affected. Some earlier extensions remain valid, and litigation is ongoing, so check how your own category is treated.
The practical lesson: file your renewal as early as USCIS allows, generally up to 180 days before expiration, and do not assume your authorization will continue while the renewal is pending. USCIS reported more than 432,000 renewals pending at least six months as of June 30, 2026.
3. How USCIS Counts Deadlines Changed on October 23
Under USCIS Policy Alert PA-2026-15, effective October 23, 2026 for paper filings received on or after that date, some deadlines no longer roll to the next business day when they land on a weekend or holiday. Here is how the RN Law Group summary of the policy breaks it down:
| Type of deadline | Example | Weekend/holiday rollover |
| Day-counted (paper) | 30 days to respond to a Request for Evidence | Yes, to next business day |
| Event- or age-based | Filing before a stay expires or before turning 21 | No |
| Online filings | Anything filed through a myUSCIS account | No |
If your deadline is close, do not count on a weekend extension. Online filings are also timestamped using UTC time unless USCIS says otherwise, which can change the calendar date for you.
Public Charge Rules for Green Card Applicants
For Form I-485 applications filed on or after September 18, 2026, USCIS evaluates age, health, family status, finances and education and skills under new public charge guidance, and a broader set of means-tested benefits may be considered. Several groups, including refugees, asylees, TPS applicants and VAWA self-petitioners, are exempt. Speak with an attorney before applying for any public benefit.

FAQs: Individual Immigration Services
What are individual immigration services?
They are legal and application services for a single person seeking a green card, work permit, citizenship, visa or related benefit, as opposed to a company-sponsored or whole-family case.
Can I file my work permit renewal early?
USCIS generally accepts renewal applications up to 180 days before the card expires. Check the current Form I-765 instructions for your category.
Did the October 16 fee increase affect green card filings?
The increases announced cover the annual asylum fee, parole, TPS and certain initial work permit categories. Always confirm the current fee for your specific form before filing.
What happens if I send the wrong fee?
USCIS rejects filings that arrive without the correct fee. You lose time, which can be critical if you are near a deadline.
Does the October 23 weekend rule apply to online filings?
No. Online filings do not receive an extra business day. Paper filings with day-counted deadlines may still roll forward, but age-based and event-based deadlines do not.
